Cracked or Blown Render in Sheffield: What Should You Do?

How to recognise common render damage, when moisture may be involved and what to tell a professional before repair work.

All guides

A crack in exterior render is not automatically a sign that the whole wall needs re-rendering. The first useful question is whether the damage is superficial, limited to one area, or linked to underlying movement or moisture. Sheffield's exposed elevations and wet winters can make existing weaknesses more noticeable.

Thin hairline cracking can sometimes relate to shrinkage or a coating issue. Wider, recurring or stepped cracks may point to movement in the substrate and deserve further investigation. Render that sounds hollow, bulges or comes loose can indicate loss of adhesion. Do not diagnose serious structural problems from appearance alone.

Look for the cause before covering the symptom. Faulty gutters, leaking downpipes, damaged coping, a poor windowsill detail or standing moisture near an external wall can keep a patch wet. A new finish applied over unresolved damp or an unstable base is unlikely to be a lasting fix.

Check safely from ground level. Photograph the whole elevation and then any cracks, staining, loose render or water paths you can see without climbing. Note whether the problem gets worse after rain or has changed over time. Avoid chipping off loose material above pedestrian routes; if pieces might fall, keep people away and seek appropriate professional advice.

A small stable area may be suitable for a localised repair after preparation and appropriate materials are selected. Where damage is extensive, the substrate is unsound or moisture is widespread, more substantial stripping and re-rendering may be needed. Colour and texture matching is another consideration for patch repairs.

For an assessment, provide the age of the property if known, current wall finish, how long the cracks have been visible, any known leaks, and photos. A rendering contractor can advise on the render system; significant wall movement or structural concerns should be assessed by a suitably qualified specialist.

Questions worth asking before work starts

  • What condition is the existing wall and render substrate in?
  • Have dampness, leaking gutters or signs of movement been investigated?
  • What preparation, materials, access and scaffolding are included in the quotation?
  • What is being repaired or replaced, and how will the finished work be checked?
